What Kinds of Benefits are Available?
A monthly benefit payment called Dependency and Indemnity Compensation may be available to surviving spouses and dependent children. Additionally dependent parents of Veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange and died as the result of diseases related to Agent Orange exposure. The benefit can include monetary compensation and health care benefits.
Survivors Also May Be Eligible For Dependency and Indemnity Compensation.
The qualifications for eligibility include the veteran succumbing to other service-related injuries or diseases. Also, total disability from service-connected conditions for certain lengths of time at the time of death is a qualification.
Surviving spouses and children of Veterans who died from a VA-rated, service-connected disability may be eligible for health care benefits. These people would be covered under the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA). Survivors also may be eligible for CHAMPVA. The criteria for eligibility is a rating of permanent and total disability from a service-connected disability at the time of death.
To be eligible for CHAMPVA, you cannot be eligible for TRICARE/CHAMPUS. The Civilian Health and Medical Program for the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS) was the healthcare benefit program that preceded TRICARE.
TRICARE is the health care program for almost 9.5 million beneficiaries worldwide. Including active duty service members, National Guard, and Reserve members. As well as retirees, their families, survivors, certain former spouses, and others registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS).
