Board for Correction of Military Records

Making Changes With The Board for Correction of Military Records

The Army Board for Correction of Military Records (ABCMR) has the following mission statement:

The Army Board for Correction of Military Records (ABCMR) is the highest level of administrative review within the Department of the Army with the mission to correct errors in or remove injustices from Army military records.

Each branch of the military has their own review board with the same mission to “correct errors in or remove injustices from military records”.

If you are seeking to change your Military Record, including overturning a discharge that left you without medical benefits, the Board for Correction of Military Records (BCMR) is your final level of appeal before heading to court. Therefore, you will need to apply to the review board for your respective service branch for corrections or changes.

You are now able to request Your Military Service Records online, by USMail, or by fax. Records include:

  • DD 214/Separation Documents
  • Or Personnel Records
  • As well as Replacement Medals
  • And also Medical Records

Where To Submit A Request

You are able to submit your request online at:

To submit your request by USMAIL or Fax use the SF-180 Form found here:

The process seems fairly clear cut on paper, however, veterans, lawyers and veteran’s advocacy groups often agree: most veterans do not apply because it’s a daunting undertaking, and they don’t think they have a chance. It can take months just to request one’s full military records, and years to see a case through completion. Few service members know the intricacies of military law well enough to make a solid argument, and hardly any can afford a lawyer.
